Special Equipment & Services
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Scan - This simple and painless scan provides a 3D image of the retina and the layers below. It is useful in diagnosing issues associated with diabetes, the macular, glaucoma and retinal abnormalities.
This scan can assist in the management of these issues and may be recommended by your optometrist if you are over 40 years of age or have a family history of eye issues. It is of benefit for all patients to undertake an OCT scan, as it can detect issues long before symptoms appear. Book an OCT scan with Helen Summers Optometrist today.
Digital Retinal Imaging (DRI) - Recommended for all new patients, digital retinal imaging allows us to get a clearer and more detailed picture of your eye's health. It can indicate changes or issues with your eye, particularly those relating to diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol, macular degeneration as well as more serious issues such as cancers of the eye. Having DRI done when you have your eyes tested allows us to compare images and uncover any changes.
Visual Field Examination - This painless test assesses the sensitivity and efficiency of both your peripheral and central vision. With the information gathered in this assessment, we can monitor specific conditions such as migraine, diabetes, glaucoma or macular degeneration or following a head injury.
Colourimetry - This involves the selection of precision lenses and tints to reduce visual stress in children and adults with reading difficulties, or suffering light sensitivity. These sensitivities can cause discomfort when reading, using a computer or writing. Specialty tints may reduce this discomfort.
IPL - IPL is Intense Pulsed Light, a technology used to treat and give relief to dry, itchy eyes caused by skin and eyelid inflammation. IPL targets the pigment on the surface of the skin or the blood vessels below. The revolutionary treatment is safe and comfortable, taking around 15 minutes and is performed by our trained Optometrists
Blephasteam -The eyelid contains many glands which secrete oils into the tear film lubricating the surface of the eye and preventing evaporation of tears. Meibomian Gland Dysfunction is when the glands become blocked or the oily secretions are of poor quality. MGD and other disorders of the lid margin and ocular surface result in symptoms including chronic, dry, gritty, gunky, irritated and watery eyes. Blephasteam is the first eyelid warming device providing moist heat therapy which naturally enhances tear film quality. The Bleaphsteam goggles heat up to 42 degrees Celsius, a temperature high enough to melt MG secretions without harming the lid skin. This treatment takes approximately 10 minutes.
A full assessment of dry eye diagnosis and management is recommended first.
